Default Rehabilitation

The Default Rehabilitation Program allows defaulted student loan borrowers who have established satisfactory repayment after default to remove the defaulted status completely from their AES-guaranteed loan account(s) and credit report histories.

Benefits of completing the Loan Rehabilitation Program

• Your rehabilitated loan will become eligible for any applicable deferments and forbearances in the future. By making yourself aware of these options, you may avoid a future default during periods of financial hardship.
  
  
• Eligibility for future student aid if you wish to return to school.

To Qualify for Loan Rehabilitation:

• Payments must be voluntary. The monthly payment amount required to participate in this program must be provided to you and approved by a representative from the AES Default Collection Department. Payments received through garnishment or federal offset do not qualify.
  
  
• You must make at least 9 payments within 20 days of your assigned due date during a period of 10 consecutive months.
  
  
• You cannot remit a lump sum amount or double payments to qualify sooner than the 10 month period. Remember that you are demonstrating the ability to maintain your monthly payments after the default status of your loan has been removed.
  
  
• You must maintain your timely billed amount payments until you receive your Rehabilitation Approval Notice. Immediately call a customer service representative if you have any questions regarding whether or not a payment should be made.
  
  
• In order to participate in the Loan Rehabilitation Program, you must have a minimum principal and interest balance of $500.00 at the time of rehabilitation (after your 9 payments are received).
  
  
• Once the Rehabilitation process has been completed, AES' Loan Servicing will be the servicer of your rehabilitated account.
